By:  Alice McColgin

Danville, IN - September 19, 2024 - The Gallery on the Square hosted nearly 50 guests when they presented five 2024 “Paint the Town” People’s Choice Awards and a new watercolor award that totaled $1,200 Thursday evening, September 19.

The McCoy Watercolor Award was presented in memory of watercolorist, Marti McCoy by her family.  McCoy was one of the founding members of the Gallery, longtime resident of Danville and recognized as an outstanding watercolorist and teacher. The winner of the McCoy Watercolor Award was selected by the plein air judges in August. Thursday evening members of McCoy’s family presented the $400 prize to artist Pam Anter of Danville. Anter’s watercolor is a summer landscape that incorporates moving water, trees and grasses.

The first People’s Choice Award was a Hendricks County Bicentennial award for the best of show “depicting Hendricks County’s rich history that includes a look to the future.” Mark Burkett of Mooresville received $200 for his rendering of the Mayberry Café. This prize sponsored by the Danville Rotary Club was presented by Rotarians Suzanne Whicker and Flory Phillips.

Lynne Dunnavant of Rosedale won $300 in the Professional People’s Choice category for her depiction of Ellis Park’s swinging bridge.

The Non-Professional $200 award was presented to Emma Cremeans of Indianapolis for her take on the Hendricks County Museum, formerly the sheriff’s residence and county jail.

Kristen Titus of Indianapolis received the $60 Teen award for creating a landscape of Danville’s local eatery, The Beehive.

Idris Laughridge of Martinsville won the Youth award for his representation of the Playscape in Ellis Park.

Of the 73 plein air pieces created at “Paint the Town” August 10, only 43 artists entered their work in the People’s Choice voting. The seventh annual plein air arts festival was sponsored by the Gallery on the Square in cooperation with the Danville Downtown Partnership.

Mark your calendar for next year’s eight daylong community arts festival Saturday, August 9, 2025.
